364 days and our first sensory bin

Tomorrow, my little man turns 1 year old. I’m not sure I quite realize it yet. Seems just weeks ago he weighed 6 lbs and was coming home from the hospital. Well, my now 24 lbs 30 inch terror is walking, talking and giving me a run for my money and I love it!

We kept Little Miss home from preschool today in anticipation of my sister-in-law’s visit for a long week-end (she is Little Man’s Godmother and is flying in for his birthday) and decided to try our first sensory binย with the little guy.

DIY Dyed Rainbow Oats forย Sensory Play

** Found this amazing idea on And Next Comes L, a great imaginative blog. **

As you can see, the whole experience started out very well… But that was just for a few minutes. Before we knew it, the bin was spilled, the sheet got rumpled and a happy Little Man led us into a 45 minutes vacuum session, cackling the whole way!

But mama was smart see, I didn’t put all my oats in the same basket. LOL! While our little mess maker was playing with dad, Little Miss and I made crafts with the leftover oats. The small pieces made her really pay attention. What a great fine motor skills activity.

All and all a very good night.

Little Man is now asleep, while his big sister is out in the gardens watering with her dad. And I’m left here thinking of the past year. So much has changed, so much has evolved in our life in ways I could never have imagined. How blessed am I to live this life I lead? I will strive everyday to merit this gift and will never take it for granted.

Have a wonderful last night sleep as an infant my darling, come 2 h 15 am, a toddler you will be. But know you will always be my baby…

About Yanic A.

Hello to all of you and thank you for stopping by! My name is Yanic. I'm a wife to a wonderful husband, a mother of 2 beautifully complex and unique children and a lover of all things inspiring. Having started a personal journey of self discovery when I found out I was pregnant with my daughter 4 years ago, I've since embraced a daily life of simpler pleasures and gratitude. As we get to know each other, you will know me as a quilter, a gardener, a Tao cultivator, a vegetarian foodie, a true believer in a healthy family life as being the secret to my happiness and hopefully as time goes on, a friend... I will try to share with you my days as they unfold, speaking of my happy successes without censoring my challenges, trying to make this blog a true portrait of the ever-changing path that I have chosen for myself. I'm hoping to find in these pages others to share with and learn from, bringing to light the absolute connection in all things and people, showing this world as being a true community.

Haha! I just knew he would dump it all out. We have 3 cats and lots of hair so there was no way I was scooping it back up. So figured, keep part of it. It really was a wonderful and simple craft idea, thank you again!

Happy belated birthday little one. This is such a great idea. I’ve been waiting till Panda was old enough for colored rice, but this is better. He already plays with oats, flour, and dehydrated potatoes (though I’m not sure that last one really counts as edible ๐Ÿ˜‰ India Tree makes a natural food coloring, but they are not as vibrant. I wonder if they would work for this?

Maybe… I know that pink is easy with raspberries or cranberries, purple is easy with blueberries and you can use herbs like parsley or basil for green… But I agree, the brightness is hard to match. But honestly, Little Man didn’t try to eat them. He was visually interested enough that it stayed all very “tactile”.
