Walking at the mall – Confessions of a city girl

So, before I start any of this, I need to state very clearly that I will ALWAYS choose nature for my children’s exploration over any other place on Earth. That being said…

Every few weeks or so, I end up having to go to the mall. Unfortunately, the biggest and most affordable organic grocery/organic bulk/health food store is situated there and sometimes, you just need something that doesn’t grow in your garden like organic cocoa powder and sweet potatoes (that do not grow up here).

I will admit that I love going walking there before the stores actually open, coffee in hand, with my son. Why in Universe do I you may ask? Because I can let him run completely free without worrying. Let me explain.

My daughter was never a real worry for us. She explored very cautiously, she was very visual so she would stare, analyse, point and eventually ask. I rarely said NO to my daughter because she rarely required emergency action. Everything with her was slow, methodical, calm… Then came Little Man :

  • Who charges at everything like a bull in front of a red cape.
  • Who has a fascination with anything dirty, smelly or gross he sees on the ground.
  • Who redefines “oral fixation”.
  • Who is def to NO, no matter in which tone mama says (or screams) it.
  • Who is (I swear) allergic to foot wear and will pull off any kind of shoe, sandal or slipper no matter where we are.

So you can imagine how right now, a nature walk is ANYTHING but relaxing. So far, I’ve dug pebbles out of his nose, acorns out of his mouth (tell me that isn’t the perfect choking hazard for a 12 month old?), I’ve caught him (repeatedly) trying to pick at his ear drum and brain through his ears and nose with sticks… And these things have happened everyday of every week, every time we go outside, ever since he’s been able to crawl. *sighs* I love that he is afraid of nothing. That will lead him places. I’m just not ready for it to lead us to the emergency room quite yet!

So the mall offers me a break. At 8 am, the indoor jungle gym is free and empty, leaving him able to climb and be without the fear of older kids trampling him. At 8 am, the halls are clean, sunny and bare, I can take off his shoes, allowing him to run without being distracted by every crumb on the ground. (I love watching running down the halls with his head held high, like he knows that the ground is safe, no use watching his feet.) At 8 am, the mall echoes and he can scream to his heart’s content and giggle at the sound of his voice answering him back.

For me (and him) it is a new sort of stimulation and exploration. He’s too young to understand marketing, all he sees is bright colors, pictures, lights. So for right now, for his freedom and mama’s sanity, the mall is sometimes our friend. And then the grocery store opens at 9 am, I get my stuff and get out. By 9 h 30 am, we are home and he has passed out in his car seat, exhausted. I transfer him to his bed and he sleeps for 2 hours straight. Mama gets to read, write, clean and maybe even sew… And life is good.

Completely understand! My boys also loved to explore, and I do believe our file was huge at the local ER. Things calm down but get crazier in different ways as they get older. And hey, if it means getting him to sleep for two straight hours and you have peace, then the shopping mall is perfect! He is a cutie!

He is, the cutest little trouble/mess maker ever! How could you ever get mad? Yeah, everyone keeps telling me “that’s having a boy”… But I was pretty bad when I was a baby so maybe it’s just genetic.

Thanks for stopping by! Have a lovely day.

My family were the opposite in a way, first born was a very cautious boy who didn’t like going too far, while third born daughter would launch herself off anything if she could climb it! It passes and common sense does return, but only after you have had to panic and cross your fingers for a few times!

You should see my face every time I turn my back and I hear him choking on something. Chills my blood! Little darling… so curious an fearless. Both things I admire and fear all at once.

Thank you for the encouragement! xo

I have never thought of the mall before hours for a walk, it is a good idea, and would be great on a rainy day or a very cold winter day 🙂 We are quite a drive from the local mall, maybe that is why it never crossed my mind.

And from a safety perspective, it is awesome. My little man was/is not huge on adventure and likes to stick pretty close, and I honestly don’t think he has ever tried to stick anything up his nose or in his ear 🙂 I can imagine keeping on eye for that kind of stuff is very stressful.

Enjoy those walks, and the quiet mama time after. xo

Yeah, we’ve done mall before hours with both the kids on stormy days : Go for breakfast at the dinner an then let them run loose!

It isn’t even that my daughter was not into adventure, she just wasn’t about recklessness… which my son EXCELS at! LOL!

It was a lovely time… when we got home, actually made my first batch of dandelion salve! Turned out great. 🙂

Hope you have a nice evening. xo

I have a friend who’s son is exactly like this. He came over the other day and with in 5 minutes he had colored my screen door with all of the sidewalk chalk, ate all our beeswax crayons and and did something to the dog. But he can be so sweet at the same time. We’ve learned to prepare for him and put most things we don’t want chewed or broken away.

Hugs mama! This too shall pass. 🙂

Oh, I know! LOL! Thankfully (or maybe not), he seems only intent on exploring on himself. He does very little destroying of the house. Maybe I should be wishing for the material goods to get the beating and not my precious baby boy???

Thank you for the encouragement… xo

Our Intrepid Explorer (Boy, Age 2) is very physical and has to be kept away from the road and open waterways near our house. Our little girls (8 Months) is less adventurous, but anything, and I mean anything, will go into her mouth. I tend to just set her down in a dirt pile when I am outside, so that I know what she is eating (dirt). Makes for a messy girl, but she enjoys it, and I am not worried about her choking, or eating something that is actually bad for her.

Ah! If only my boy would stay where I put him. LOL! Put your boy and your girl together times 5… LOL! But I agree. I always try to redirect him to the sand box.

That does all make perfect sense! And, without wanting to wish his teeny years away, how lovely it will also be when he grows out of the in the mouth, nose, ears phase. We’re very much on the nature side too, and I try to avoid shopping malls like the plague, but there’s one very large supermarket that we occasionally go to and it has an escalator – Maria just adores it and would happily go up and down it non stop for hours I think!

I’m so glad so many of you can relate. I wrote the post and told my hubby : That is it, I’m gonna annoy everybody with my city girl fix-it with the mall attitude, LOL!
