A day of making.

Today was all about making… It was about dad making muffins for big and little people (vegan apple pumpkin muffins to be precise) and starting our journey down the sourdough starter road. It was about expanding on our own recipes and making them even better : in this case, turning our idea of asparagus salt into garden vegetable salt adding dehydrated broccoli stems, white and orange carrot peels and celery leaf to the mix. It was about learning from dear friends and preserving food in new ways, prolonging once more the bounty of summer. It was also about sweet bites to be shared with friends on a special night celebration of faith. And a day just isn’t a day without my little foreman checking on me from time to time… Making sure mama is keeping a mindful and grateful heart in all she does.

But it’s easy to feel blessed when you truly are. And I thank Heaven for my life everyday…

Good night.

About Yanic A.

Hello to all of you and thank you for stopping by! My name is Yanic. I'm a wife to a wonderful husband, a mother of 2 beautifully complex and unique children and a lover of all things inspiring. Having started a personal journey of self discovery when I found out I was pregnant with my daughter 4 years ago, I've since embraced a daily life of simpler pleasures and gratitude. As we get to know each other, you will know me as a quilter, a gardener, a Tao cultivator, a vegetarian foodie, a true believer in a healthy family life as being the secret to my happiness and hopefully as time goes on, a friend... I will try to share with you my days as they unfold, speaking of my happy successes without censoring my challenges, trying to make this blog a true portrait of the ever-changing path that I have chosen for myself. I'm hoping to find in these pages others to share with and learn from, bringing to light the absolute connection in all things and people, showing this world as being a true community.

  1. Days of making are the best. Sounds like it was well enjoyed by all. Looks like your roasted tomatoes turned out well, enjoy! And sour dough starter, have fun! We usually start one up this time of year for the winter, but we are skipping it this year.

    Very blessed indeed. xo

I’ve never been successful at it before (sourdough starter) but I also didn’t use to be at home. It was so easy to forget to “feed the beast” when I was running all over the place. Now, it will simply become part of the routine. I’m still going to make regular yeast bread, but I saw this recipe for sourdough tortillas on Prairie Homestead and I’m so anxious to try them!

The roasted tomatoes turned out so well (the house smelled so good) that we are going to go to the farmer’s market and buy a case of romas and roast more. Very exciting.

Have a lovely day my friend. xo

  2. I worked on quilting and some on writing. And I peeled a couple pounds of lovely new red potatoes. We boiled them and mashed them. Then we wrapped servings in wax paper and added them to the stores in our freezer. They can be mashed potatoes or potato pancakes or added to soup … I think tomorrow we need to work on tomatoes.

Sounds like a very productive day for you as well. I can’t wait to get back to quilting. Mid September should be around the time when things start to really slow and I start playing with fabric again…

Tomatoes are a lot of work, but so worth it! 🙂

Oh what a lovely post! I hope your sourdough thrives. Is it still warm with you? I have only had success starting a starter (if you see what I mean) when the weather was pretty hot. I have an active one at the moment, which is great. Watching sourdough at work is just magic. I love being able to make bread with nothing more than flour and water (we don’t salt our bread, but I love the idea of your garden vegetable/asparagus salt).
By the way, your little man is changing…he looks less like a baby!

The nights have been cooler, but the days still very warm. I keep mine near the fridge (space on the corner where I also rise my bread) because the heat coming off the fan in the back of the fridge keeps that part of the counter warm. Soon, we will be closing the doors and heating the house so the temps will be nice and even. Like I was saying in a previous comment, I’ve never been successful at it before for lack of discipline. But being home everyday now allows me to just work it into my routine : feed the cat, feed the yeast… LOL!

He is growing up so fast. We went for his yearly check up and he has gotten to that point where he has stunted in weight, but keeps gaining in length. Building muscles and loosing his little chubbiness. It’s amazing to watch. I’ll post a picture of my little Miss soon, you’ll see that both my kids are very much little people now. Tugs at a mama’s heart…

      Have a wonderful day!

Sounds like a perfect day. I’ve never tried sour dough starting, but I do like the sound of feeding the yeast! Good luck with it.
