Playing with fabric again…

Summer has never been a very “sewing” season for me. I don’t know what it is? The call of the outdoors, the need for my body to not remain seated longer than necessary or maybe it’s simply my difficulty at following straight lines when all my mind, body and soul wants to do is wind and meander! I even took up English Paper Piecing last year in hopes that the portable nature of it would inspire me to sew even when I was enjoying the out-of-doors, but nope… My sewing machine just sat staring at me all summer long, begging to be played with.

I did manage to put together a few projects though (thank you birthdays and blog swap!) and feel like I didn’t completely abandon my craft :

But now we enter the season of more time spent inside : Nesting, warming, cooking, baking and finally sewing! Every year, my daughter’s birthday calls me back to my sewing machine. How I LOVE making her birthday bunting. Due to our trip North to go to the Zoo this year, I wasn’t able to finish it in time for her actual birthday. But it will be finished for her birthday party tomorrow and will then be hung above her bed in the new bedroom we have made for them. The fabrics were more precisely chosen this year, wanting to merge with the “concept” we have for their room. But also, I will admit, this birthday felt less like a “scrap fabric” birthday. My baby girl is 4 years old. She doesn’t dress randomly anymore, she loves to find things that match. She loves to accessorize, choosing her hair pins and ribbons very carefully. She sees patterns in drawings now, colors rainbows in order. No… this was not a scrap fabric kind of year. So I pulled out my fat quarters and actually picked 3 out. I did not randomly choose left over binding strips, I made a new one. It felt good to be mindful of my choices, to really put some thought into it. I label myself an eclectic quilter. I love this mismatched, scrappy, all-over-the-place-but-somehow-cohesive style of mine. But sometimes, simple is better. So you get a sneak peek, but no more for now…
