Window Garden & Mid-week Update

A few weeks back (or is it months now, boy does time just fly!), I had posted about us starting to tear down the kitchen cabinets. Although, the project has been put on hold to deal with a few more pressing home renovations, i.e. redoing our one and only bathroom because of having to replace a cracked acrylic bath tub, the one thing that has still been going on is my dream of having my very own window herb garden.

As you can see, I finally have a few that have sprouted despite of the cold. The left would be little wisps of garden sage and the right is Genovese basil.  Although I’m starting to seriously doubt I’ll be able to harvest from either of them before late spring, just watching them sprout and grow has been a real motivation. We’ve broken out the grow lamps and I now have some of my medicinal herbs in sprouting beds. I’m hoping that by late March, both shelves will be bursting with greenery.

And with the days still very chilly (although, it is suppose to warm up nicely this afternoon, keep your fingers crossed for us), we have been finding ways of keeping busy. Spring inspired crafts, brightly colored toys, over heated rooms and morning popcorn movie dates have kept us smiling. It is my true belief that a warm body, warm heart, warm spirit and warm soul are all as equally important in these days of continuous cold. There isn’t much in life that is certain, but for now at least, the turning of the seasons is. Spring is coming my friends… hang in there!

About Yanic A.

Hello to all of you and thank you for stopping by! My name is Yanic. I'm a wife to a wonderful husband, a mother of 2 beautifully complex and unique children and a lover of all things inspiring. Having started a personal journey of self discovery when I found out I was pregnant with my daughter 4 years ago, I've since embraced a daily life of simpler pleasures and gratitude. As we get to know each other, you will know me as a quilter, a gardener, a Tao cultivator, a vegetarian foodie, a true believer in a healthy family life as being the secret to my happiness and hopefully as time goes on, a friend... I will try to share with you my days as they unfold, speaking of my happy successes without censoring my challenges, trying to make this blog a true portrait of the ever-changing path that I have chosen for myself. I'm hoping to find in these pages others to share with and learn from, bringing to light the absolute connection in all things and people, showing this world as being a true community.

  2. Oh, I love your window herb garden! There is nothing like fresh herbs. It reminds me of Jamie Oliver and his kitchen, having all those herbs in little pots. Maybe I can try something similar, just to find enough space. You are a true talent in capturing the atmosphere in your home. The photo where your kiddos are eating popcorn is so beautifully peaceful. Enjoy the coziness of the warm home, spring is coming! 🙂 ❤

Thank you… we’ve unplugged the TV so any form of screen entertainment is on the computer now. Popcorn is a great way to have them sit at the table without complaining. LOL! But yes, our house is pretty slow and peaceful these days. These little hibernating animals of mine have been slow to move. They wake up tired regardless of the long nights of sleep. Sunshine and real free-moving exercise (without 10 lbs of snow gear) is definitely needed.

Have a wonderful day my dear, thank you for stopping by!

Thank you Susan, I try and find the good in everything. (To a fault sometimes LOL!)… I always like to garden year round. One day. I want to give actual winter gardening a try. But for now, sprouting and herbs and greens are what we do. It,s supposed to be beautiful next week, a real spring break week. It will be nice. Can’t wait for that warm warm sun to return. Stay warm!

  7. “Just watching them sprout and grow has been a real motivation.” So true! You’re right, it is inevitable, Spring will come, Spring will come, Spring will come. Seems to be this time of year I always start sewing all of those bright summery garments 😉

We’re breaking out all the stops here with two snowstorms this week already and two more coming in in the next five days, they say anyways. There are so many toys that are usually packed away I can’t see the floor. But, they are happy, so Mama is happy. And lots and lots of popcorn as well. We’re pretty low screen time around here, the kids anyways, but these are the days when we break out the “shows,” as we call them. I love that they have something exciting to look forward to during these long days when 30 minutes outside is about all we can manage.

Your house looks so sunny and cheery, and it’s not just the sunshine from outside. Thanks for giving us all a bit of a lift!

What sweet thing (things) to say, thank you. 🙂 We are the same here. I even have PlayMobil strewn about everywhere in my sewing room. LOL! We’ve lost complete control of the house, I have no clue how to make sense of it anymore, but the kiddos are in a good mood despite the cabin-feverish conditions so like you, I let it go. Thank goodness for shows streamed from the internet, that is for sure. (We gave up cable months ago).

Keep smiling dear friend, stay warm and be safe during the upcoming storms. Spring is around the corner. xox

  8. The plants look like they’re doing well. Having to grow in the cooler weather will make them hardy. And the popcorn! Oh how I love popcorn! Such a good snack for the kids.

We have no snow in the forecast this weekend. I don’t remember the last weekend that both days were nice. I’m going to focus on the weekend and not think too much about Monday’s forecast.

Oh no! We are getting wonderful weather all through next week here. I was hoping that was a wide spread trend. I’m so sorry. We are getting some snow, but a few inches here and there. Enough for the kiddos to be excited, not enough for us to be discouraged. LOL! Yes! Please, take advantage of the week-end. Have a wonderful time. xo

I’m the same way. If my plants are growing well, even in the dead DEAD of winter, then I know that my home is a warm and loving place.
Stay warm as well. Hope March brings you some sun and a few milder days.

Even if you can’t harvest those herbs yet, as well as the motivation of seeing them grow, you get the joy of smelling them too. I especially love the smell of basil, very evocative. And it may be hard to keep those bodies warm over there at the moment but your hearts, spirits and souls are most definitely always warm.

My goodness, seems like it will be forever until we get flowers. It always feels that way when March gets here. LOL! But when it starts melting, it usually happens pretty quick. *fingers crossed*
