Light is a beautiful thing. When you wake up in the morning, it energizes you, makes you feel like the day is full of promise. As the sun gets higher in the sky, the world around you gets warmer : flowers open, more and more plants unfurl, gardens grow. But evening light is my favorite light. There is a calm that comes over me when the sun lowers, like a warm embrace. Radiant, but not blinding, warm but not ridiculously hot, satisfying, the perfect end to the day.
I love how everything that seemed the same color in the light of day explodes into nuance. How many shades of greens, browns, blues and white are there? The possibilities seem endless. Longer shadows make all things seem bigger than they are, leaving me to feel small, protected, a part of nature.
When most people head in is when we head out. I love bringing my children to the woods when the light is low. They can see things more clearly. Textures, smells, sounds… they seem to amplify when the day is setting. They feel it all.
How I would love to peek inside their dreams at night. I know they must be happy ones because I never hear a peep anymore. Yes, both my kiddos are sleeping through the night now and I credit it all to Mother Nature and her healing magic. Bodies, minds and souls, happily spent, sleep the deep sleep.
Good night everyone.
OH my dear this is so beautiful YOu need to keep track of your writing and keep it so you maybe can make a book at some point to encourage others to see and feel..and embrace the things you find so beautiful and express them so well. My what a talent you have …and such a depth of understanding of joy! You are so blessed. Thank you for sharing this, I surely needed to read it and now , will again.—Merri

Such sweet words Merri, thank you. I plan on printing off many of my posts later on for my children. To leave them this journal of our time and life. That was always my objective. To keep a record of this short time, made meaningful by the way we choose to live it. I’m just happy I can make other people happy with my musings. If everyone could make one other person smile in a day, then everyone would smile everyday. xo

Thank you Carie… I have to be precise in saying that it is my soon that was yet to sleep through the night. Until about 8 weeks ago, he was still waking 3-4 times a night, most nights being up for hours between 11pm and 2am. Little Miss has been a rock-of-a-sleeper since about 8 months of age. 🙂 But both of them sharing a room meant that she would get woken up. Not anymore. YAY indeed… I don’t know WHAT to do with all that extra sleep. 🙂

Beautiful writing, and wonderful to have 2 sound sleepers now! I love evening light too, we frequently head out late, especially in the holidays. And I think it’s another reason I so much prefer Summer to Winter.

Thank you dear Sally. I’m looking forward to evenings getting a bit warmer so we can sit out in our pjs, enjoying a nice fire in our outdoor fireplace.
Ah! but being Canadian, there is a part of me that has a true and deep love for winter evening light : street lamp light, flashlight, moonlight… Oh, moonlight on snow is glorious. Makes everything look blue and purple. 🙂

Amen Nicole! And with the harsh winter we’ve had, we have a lot of “connecting with mama” to do.

Lovely pictures. I love evening light too, but early morning feels the most special to me – that time when you’re out so early it’s like you’re the only one in the world! Glad your children are finding mother nature so soothing – it’s such an important part of childhood.

Funny enough, when I used to live in the city, morning light was my favorite as well for that exact reason. I always felt like all the world was asleep : before cars, before businesses opened, before everyone really (I’ve always been an early bird)…
And yes, having my children live a childhood similar to mine, filled with exploration, senses filled, even with the scrapes, bumps and bruises… I’m a happier person today because of that.
Thank you for stopping by! Have a lovely week-end.

Thank you Chelsea… You guys should take an evening walk this week-end. It,s just wonderful! It takes some planning to head out around that time every night. It would be prime dinner eating time. But by managing to have dinner practically on the table when my husband walks i the door around 5 makes it possible for us to head out around 5 h 45 and not come home until passed 7. That allows us a night time routine that is still reasonable. But sometimes we get over excited, we’ll stay out until dark and the kiddos aren’t in bed until past 8 h 30. That usually ens up being a disaster LOL!. But well worth it I think.

I love the evening light, but truth be told though, I love all light. The early morning light is refreshing, and fills me with hope, the evening light is reflective, and inspiring. We just came in from a very chilly evening walk, and from covering all the tender plants for Mother Nature’s last hurrah…a late spring frost.
Enjoy your weekend. xo

Oh, we are preparing to cover our plum and apple trees… they are in full bloom and they are announcing -6C here. Thank goodness we have almost nothing planted that is not frost resistant. A little patch of beans to cover, that is it for the veggies. Wishing you a lovely week-end and hoping that your garden doesn’t end up with too much damage. xo

Thank you dear… we just can’t get enough of nature these days. Even with the cold snap this past week-end, we were out every chance we could. It seems impossible to believe that just 1 month ago, we had not one leaf in the trees and now, everything is green, lush and alive. I love living somewhere with 4 seasons. I wouldn’t change it.

Thank you so much Summer. You are too kind. I can only imagine how your attention to light and dark changes when learning a skill so dependent on them. Just goes to show that a true passion really fills every part of our lives.
