A long overdue day

It’s been a long time coming. My hubby and I have been so busy with life that we had become passing ships. Waving to each other as the days moved along. We are lucky enough that many of our activities and passions bring us together, but doing things together and spending a day together are two very separate thing.

The last time we left the kids with my parents was New Years Eve. We had been invited to a celebration (combination house-warming and new year celebration) and had decided to go. Little Man slept without us for the first time that night and did wonderfully. It felt so good to see friends, but it still, looking back, wasn’t exactly “time spent together”.

So when you get to that point where you cannot honestly remember the last time you had a day alone with the man of your dreams, your best friend, the father of your beautiful children, your soul mate, you need to take some time. And that is what we did. We dropped off the kids, we headed out and drove East to a little island named Île-aux-Coudres.

I’ve told you before that my River is a part of me. That my River has shaped much of what I am. Well, when the warmer season comes, the River calls to me once more. Going East means salt… where the salt water of the St-Lawrence Gulf meets the fresh water travelling from the Great Lakes is where we went. When we stepped out of the car on the ferry, it smelled like the sea. We stood and closed our eyes, soaking it in.

Much of our day was spent walking the beaches. (I had promised dearest Tracey that I would find myself a beach!) We were lucky to come in as the tide was going out. We were able to walk for miles on long stretches of rocks and pebbly sand, watching herons fly in and out, watching loons and cormorants diving along the shore, watching mama ducks bringing their ducklings out onto the shallow waters in search of food. Swallows flew around our heads and the skies were filled with butterflies. The weather was perfect : sunny, cool, breezy. We walked hand-in-hand, talked uninterrupted for hours (what a luxury!), not once did the radio get turned on in the car. We rolled down our windows and let our faces get whipped by the warm waterside winds. It was glorious.

On the way back, we took a little detour. I just can’t resist a sign for a covered bridge. There is something so romantic about them. We drove along a winding gravel road, soaking up the view, to finally arrive. It was beautiful. Silent and strong, a proud piece of the local history.

And we came home. We had dinner at my parents and heard all about our kiddos’ day. They were spoiled, they were dirty and sweaty, the way kiddos should be. And we were rested, renewed, still happy in love and happy to be home, the way parents should be.

Take time for yourselves my friends. Remember that before being parents, your were a couple… and before being a couple, you were a person. All parts of you need to feel fulfilled, all parts of you make you whole.

Wishing you the most wonderful week.

About Yanic A.

Hello to all of you and thank you for stopping by! My name is Yanic. I'm a wife to a wonderful husband, a mother of 2 beautifully complex and unique children and a lover of all things inspiring. Having started a personal journey of self discovery when I found out I was pregnant with my daughter 4 years ago, I've since embraced a daily life of simpler pleasures and gratitude. As we get to know each other, you will know me as a quilter, a gardener, a Tao cultivator, a vegetarian foodie, a true believer in a healthy family life as being the secret to my happiness and hopefully as time goes on, a friend... I will try to share with you my days as they unfold, speaking of my happy successes without censoring my challenges, trying to make this blog a true portrait of the ever-changing path that I have chosen for myself. I'm hoping to find in these pages others to share with and learn from, bringing to light the absolute connection in all things and people, showing this world as being a true community.

what a weekend! I loved the photo of you and your hubbie, so sweet. Sounds like you had a good time together and I hope you do it again and again. My husband and I would have three hour dates when our youngest was in preschool 🙂

Hehe! I love that. I would take a 3 hour date on a regular basis. A little while back, we had asked our babysitter to come because we were suppose to have our Tao teachings and they were cancelled. We almost cancelled her but then opted for tea and reading instead. Snuggled up on a couch in a little café with a good cup of tea, each of us silent together, reading our books. It was wonderful. I don’t think we said 5 words to each other all night, but the silence was priceless!

Good for you. It’s so important to take time for just the two of you. We don’t have much opportunity to go out at night together so we try to take advantage of my husband’s work schedule, which gives him Friday off every other week. During the school year, we always plan to do something together while the children are in school. It’s only a few hours but it makes a big difference.

Oh my, that is wonderful… I would love for my hubby to have a 4 day work schedule. Good that you guys make it a priority. I think that is where we fall short : we tend to always put our time alone on the back burner when something comes up.

We really want to make it more of a regular thing. We had planned into our New year intentions a monthly date, but that just kind of fell away. We need to be so much better about it. With the kids getting older, it should be easier and easier now. 🙂

I feel blessed that I have found a man that doesn’t hold my complete devotion to our children over my head as neglect of him! 🙂 These rare little moments are so magical. But we need to start making them a bit less “rare”.

I remember it being such a big deal for us when my daughter stayed away for the first time. We couldn’t sleep… hearing ghost cries all night. My parents had offered us a night of rest and we ended up more tired than before. LOL! With the 2nd (and yes, I know, everyone says that) it wasn’t so bad. We were more worried about my parents : being tired, him waking, looking for us and being more difficult to handle since he was a more fitful baby. And as usual, he had proven us wrong. I’m sure the first time it happens, you’ll hate every moment. But then wen it happens again, you’ll do better. The reunion is the best part. 🙂

I am so blessed to have my husband as a partner. There is never a time where we disagree on the right thing to do for our kids, our home… But we both tend to put ourselves last. So this was definitely needed. My parents have already offered to take the kids again a few times this summer and we will surely be taking their offer!

Thank you Tracey… it was quite a find, but I will have to go further East and really show you pictures of what beaches can look like. They get pretty impressive. 🙂 Oh my, if you do hitch a ride, you have to let me know! You have your own personal guide.

What a wonderful place to go on your day together, and I hope you find ways to squeeze time like that in more often. It’s never easy, there are always so many other things to do, we’re not very good at it over here.

Yes, we are horrible at carving out some time as well. Goodness, just convincing ourselves to leave takes week. 🙂 But I’m hoping that as the kids get older It will get easier. It felt wonderful.

Beautiful. So glad you two got to get away, and what a get away it was/ I need to move to that island. It looks like a soothing balm for the soul. I’ll be at lake Superior this weekend and will give a wave across the distance 🙂

It was truly. My husband and I were talking on the trip about whether or not we would move somewhere so remote and I think we came up with “not full time”… I think it’s very enticing in summer, but I would be a bot afraid of winter there I think. The winds from the river, having to rely on a ferry to get off the island. It’s probably the city girl in me talking. 🙂
