I hope all of you are doing well. We have been enjoying the most glorious weather the last few days. The sun has been shining bright, sunrises and sunsets have been amazing, star-gazing has been wonderous, the woods have been calling morning, noon and night and we are being often visited all our feathered friends, some sooner than usual due to the warmer climate. We have also started Little Man’s therapy and we couldn’t be happier. He has been responding very well to all the stimulation. We are currently receiving 4 hours of in-home care a week, which should increase to 6 to 9 hours a week come March. More and more, his therapy is a part of our daily life and I’m grateful for the support and the learning opportunity.

A few weeks ago, I shared with you my new year intentions. I had given myself the month of January to come up with a real plan in my new desire to create a more “me friendly” space in this busy life I lead. I know most of you will understand how it may take up to a month for a mother to lay down a real plan for something as simple as carving up free time. And although I’m still figuring stuff out, I have narrowed down basic guidelines to how I would like my year to unfold and I thought I’d share what I have so far :

Health :

Although I consider myself pretty active, my kind of activity revolves around running after my kids and carrying a 35 lbs toddler around most days. It does keep one on her toes, but I’ve found myself craving something more structured. So I’ve decided to start doing yoga again. As much as I would love to join a yoga studio and leave, mat on my shoulder with peace of mind and a song in my heart, lets face it : It won’t happen this year. So my husband and I have decided to give an online membership a try. I’m signing us up for the free trial this week-end. And I know my husband will keep me in check. I have also decided to cut down on caffeine. I had become pretty horrible with coffee towards the end of 2015 and I have reduced it to One Good Cup a day, but only if I drink my 16 oz of lemon water before. It’s been amazing how much more energized I’ve felt. Now, we have allowed ourselves the luxury of a second cup on week-ends when out and about, but those have been pretty rare.

Reading List :

Believe it or not, I only read 4 books last year. Actually, I should say I read 3 books because one, I read twice. Now, I read plenty of magazines and a few books relating to my online herbal studies course, but for leisure, that was it. And for a girl that used to read one book a week, I find it rather pitiful. In addition to not reading, I’ve also amassed a fairly important collection of books I am yet to read. So, I’ve given myself a 10 book challenge for the year. I figure those, plus the books on my course reading list should be a great way to get me out of my reading funk.

I’ve decided on 6 non fiction (I love a good non fiction book), 2 fiction (I’m open to suggestions, I’ve already started my first one) and 2 re-reads. Why re-reads? Well, one of the few books I did manage to read last year was “The Life-changing Magic Of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art Of Decluttering And Organizing” by Marie Kondo. Through a series of purging efforts, I was able to reduce my book collection by about 60%. As I was going through my books and asking myself what these books meant to me and if they sparked joy, I promised myself that every book I was keeping, I would at some point over the next few years read again. So what better time to start than now?

I also promised myself to read the books I had yet to read and kept. So no new books for myself for a little while. I have enough on my shelves.

Journaling :

As I had mentioned as well, I wanted to start journaling. I’ve always wanted to, but never got into it. Always something better to do, you know? But I am determined now. I will be building my Bullet Journal and setting it in motion come February 1st (Don’t you just love when a month starts on a Monday?) and the same with my Yes Book, inspired by Mara. I’m planning on using my Bullet Journal for my more official “to-dos” and tasks, but I’m allowing myself to make my Yes Book a free-flowing writing adventure. A place to not only write down my ideas, but also to keep a record of everything that inspires me.

One last piece of writing I want to start is about our Little Man’s journey. I think that setting goals as a family and with his therapists, keeping track of what works and what doesn’t, taking time to acknowledge that fact that this work needs to be put in and the results that follow will be a wonderful tool. Because I know I will remember a lot, but I can’t remember everything. I found a wonderfully simple weekly planner online that I want to use. Taking the time to sit down at the beginning of each week, figuring out my feelings, addressing different issues and planning the week ahead I think will make me feel less stressed out. I think everyone will benefit greatly.

So that is my plan for now. I’m sure more will pop up as days move along. But for now, I think that is a good start.

I hope that all your new year intentions are going well and that you are finding time for yourself in your busy life. Have a wonderful week-end my friends.

About Yanic A.

Hello to all of you and thank you for stopping by! My name is Yanic. I'm a wife to a wonderful husband, a mother of 2 beautifully complex and unique children and a lover of all things inspiring. Having started a personal journey of self discovery when I found out I was pregnant with my daughter 4 years ago, I've since embraced a daily life of simpler pleasures and gratitude. As we get to know each other, you will know me as a quilter, a gardener, a Tao cultivator, a vegetarian foodie, a true believer in a healthy family life as being the secret to my happiness and hopefully as time goes on, a friend... I will try to share with you my days as they unfold, speaking of my happy successes without censoring my challenges, trying to make this blog a true portrait of the ever-changing path that I have chosen for myself. I'm hoping to find in these pages others to share with and learn from, bringing to light the absolute connection in all things and people, showing this world as being a true community.

Those sound like perfect and well thought out plans for a really good year! It is so hard to find that time for ourselves as moms. I read the Tidying Up Book as well, right before the New Year and – so funny- I also decluttered tons of books. I am a book hoarder. I do fine everywhere else, but it’s the books that get me! I also am trying to limit myself on new books from the library with the intention of reading the neglected ones at home. Anyways, I hope you do share some of your writings here with us!!! Here’s to the new year!

Thank you… I used to be a huge book hoarder as well. Until I started moving around quite a lot. Moving hundreds of books became so daunting. We also have some great places to donate books here so it,s always nice to know someone else can enjoy them.

I’m sure I’ll get to a point when I’ll share some of my thoughts, but I can’t say when. Not being much of a writer, I have a feeling I’ll be pretty critical of myself. I’ll try and muster up the courage though, I promise.

      Have a wonderful week-end. xo

I’ve been looking forward to hearing about your plans, Yanic. What you have come up with sounds very hopeful, and also doable. I read a pathetic amount last year (in fact, for the last…many years) as well! I have to read complex documents for work, and after magazines (e.g. Taproot), I found I didn’t get round to any ‘real’, nourishing, thought-provoking reading. I used to be such a bookworm, I find it sad that I hardly read any literature any more. So I have been making more of an effort. The book I most enjoyed last year was the Miniaturist by Jessie Burton. Good luck with your plans!

Ooh! I just checked out the book, it sounds really intriguing! My library has it in French, I may have to check that one out, thank you.

      Have a nice week-end xo

    • You sound like me. There were many years that the majority of my reading was textbooks for school, or research for work. Occasional light fiction was about as much as I could manage other than those. Now I feel very fortunate — I have both time and inclination to read some things that are more challenging and more interesting in a personal way. I hope you can find ways to add more literature in your life. But also remember we only have so much time and energy, and we always have trade-offs.

Thank you for your advice… I think that is why I’ve set my bar so low : 10 is very feasable. I didn’t want to over extend myself. I think I would rather surprise myself by reading more. You know?

I wish you well on your journey. “Me friendl” space is so very important. I hope you find your peace. Cutting caffeine is another huge step. I don’t know if I could ever give up my morning tea. Mary Roach is a favorite nonfiction author of mine. I love all of her books. When you are ready for a new book let me know and I will happily send some your way. Thank you again for the link. The weekly planner is a good jumping off point. Shine on-

  5. Congratulations on a productive start to your year. YES make some time for physical activity. Even lying on the floor on your back every day and making time to stretch through all your parts, pressing your lower back into the floor (tightening your belly and strengthening your core), even if that is ALL you do it is a good way to start the day. I try to do core work most days and it really helps me. I think this is going to be a great year for you as you care more for yourself. Your whole family will benefit, too. xo

  6. I remember years when I read little, when the children were young and there wasn’t time. It’s frustrating isn’t it, but it does past. I found it was important to make time for it during my day otherwise it didn’t happen. I don’t read that much even now, but I do read which is the important part for me.

Your goals sound great and very achievable, I hope 2016 is a wonderful year for you and your family.

I’m like you… for the longest time, I used to just put it off, put it off, and then, days, weeks would go by and I wouldn’t pick up a single book. I also have never read very fast. So a book for me takes so long to start with. But I’m determined this year! 🙂 Thank you for the nice words of encouragement. xox

What beautiful photographs! I also have an intention of reading more this year and am on my second book (The Year of Living Danishly by Helen Russell which is actually making me laugh out loud – my first read was An Astronaut’s Guide to Life on Earth by Chris Hadfield – both well out of my usual reading comfort zone). I also like the idea of your online yoga and will be interested to see how you get on. I tried Bullet Journaling last year but although I loved the idea, I couldn’t make the habit stick and have ended up on a shared Google calendar with my husband – not quite as attractive as my lovely journal, but much more practical when I need to know where he’s working! xx

Ooh, that Helen Russell one looks like a fun read. I’ll have to look for that at our library.

I’m hoping I get the hang of the Bullet Journal. My husband started his and it seems technical. But I think that is my big issue : I’m not technical enough sometimes. I lack discipline in many ways and I think that forcing myself to keep something that demands a bit more effort will be good for me. And I figure my Yes Book can be for my flight of fancy side… which is HIGHLY predominant! LOL!

Thank you for your visit and the kind words about my pictures.

This looks a manageable, realistic list, with lots of benefits! Re: the journal–once you get into the habit, I think you’ll love doing this. I’ve been doing it for 5 years, every day, and it’s so helpful! I do mine in an app so I can search for topics–if my doctor asks when my last bone density test was, I can say exactly. If I want to know what my mood was last year at this time, I can find out. Do your writing at the same time every day and soon it’ll be routine.

That is a great idea… to have it set at on time during the day. I’m thinking night time would be better for me. I often find thaat reading is hard late at night. I get so sleepy so fast. But writing would probably work since you are actively doing something. Hard to nod off when your hand is moving. 🙂

you could try to change coffee for a good cup of tea. i’m a pu erh lover, it’s strong and maybe could work for you in the mornings… and green tea the rest of the day. there are so many delicious tastes…
i’m “trying” to read more too this year, i took all my unread books from my mum’s house and i’ve started the year reading a lot. i love everything from chuck palahniuk.

I actually cannot drink tea first thing in the morning. It upsets my stomach something fierce. I don’t know why. I need to have had breakfast first. But coffee does not, Although I always try to have plenty of lemon water in me before the coffee comes in.

I do not know that author, I will have to check him out. Any titles to suggest?

even green tea? maybe an herbal tea, like ginger+lemon?
palahniuk’s “fight club”s writer, you could start with “diary” 🙂

Fantastique.

  11. I hope you get all your goals squeezed in. When my kids were little I read and knit. I really didn’t do much else when I was tending to them or chasing them. I cannot imagine a morning without my coffee. However it’s not all caffeinated 🙂

Oh! I’m not even trying to go without my cup of coffee. I love my Frnehc pressed dark roast in the morning. But, I have limited myself to one 10 oz cup and then, that is it. I don’t plan on taking it completely away. 🙂

Thank you for the well wishes… And yeah, tending after little people tends to always take center stage. So much being left waiting in the wings. But my husband and I did our first 45 minutes yoga class through Yoga Glo last night and it felt wonderful. I’ve missed yoga…
